Project Read

On Monday, March 25th, Mrs. Benware and National Honor Society members visited the elementary classrooms to read and distribute books for "Project Read."

Which light bulb is the best?

Which light bulb is the best?  Is it the cheapest or the one that is the brightest…no maybe it’s the one that uses the less energy…but wait, could it be a combination of all of the above?  You bet! 

Teacher LEADER Stacy Maynard and her 5^th grade science class hosted a demonstration by Dr. Glenn Lipscomb, Professor and Chemical Environmental Engineer from the University of Toledo on Thursday, March 21^st.  The students took a variety of data measurements and made dozens of observations during the one hour session trying to determine which bulb had the greatest value. 

So…which bulb will be suggested for purchase?  Mrs. Maynard will be reviewing their data next week with the students to come up with a final recommendation.  So parents, as the lighting in your home operates more efficiently hold on to your wallets and purses as you go shopping for new light bulbs!

Ready for Districts

Prior to their district Competetion, the 7th and 8th grade bands give an evening performance.  Both bands scored an overall "one" in competition.

Reggie Rainbow visits the Elementary Hearing Impaired Classroom

Reggie Rainbow made a brief visit to the Hearing Impaired classroom.  He told the students to remember to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Ronald McDonald visits Ida Elementary Students

Ida Elementary students had a visit from Ronald McDonald on Tuesday, March 19th. They enjoyed their Reading Assembly with him.

Spelling Bee Winners

Congratulations to the top ten Spelling Bee contestants. Overall winner Madison Eby will compete in the County Spelling Bee, and runner-up Garret malone will serve as alternate.

Ida Participates in the Smarter Balanced Pilot

6th graders at Ida Middle School are getting a chance to participate in the Smarter Balanced Online Assessment that will replace the MEAP in 2014-15.  We are getting the chance to check out what types of questions will be asked and if our technology is at the level needed.

Board of Education Meeting Updates

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

March 11, 2013

The building administrators provided an update to the board and community on the District’s Strategic Plan. Building level teams have been working diligently to develop the actions plans that support the strategies outlined in our planning document. Many of the actions have been implemented. The staff will begin working on the evaluation process that will be used to measure growth for each goal area.

The February enrollment was only down one student from the fall enrollment which is very good news. One of the issues that have made budgeting challenging is declining enrollment. We are optimistic that student enrollment has begun to stabilize.

Mr. Dyer presented the Fiscal Year 2013 and Fiscal Year 2014 budgets. At this point it appears that the district will spend approximately $268,000 of the fund equity this year (2013). The initial projections for 2014 based on the Governor’s budget proposal indicate a deficit between $1,050,000 and $1,150,000.

The Board of Education approved a plan to reduce expenses by $324,000 for the 2014 budget year. The elimination of four teaching positions, two assistant positions and reducing costs in the areas of supplies/services is included in the plan.

Ms. Kimling, Assistant Technology Technician, was given a raise. She has worked for the district for 34 years and she does a great job. The entire Board of Education is very appreciative of her dedication to Ida Schools, commitment to her job, and sincere effort she makes every day to ensure the technology within the schools works efficiently.

The Board of Education will be holding a Board Workshop on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school library. They are planning to review the governing team’s Standards of Practice, communication protocols, responsibilities and update the superintendent’s evaluation system for Ida Public Schools.

On Thursday, March 7th, elementary students enjoyed Dr. Balogh and his dental staff coming and performing the "Cavity Caper" during their lunch times. The students enjoyed the comical skit while learning about dental hygiene.  Thank you to Dr.Balogh and his staff!

 The 5th and 6th grade Young Author Winners visit with Michigan author, Jonathan Rand at the Young Author Conference.  He is the author of the Michigan Chiller series.

Ida Girls Basketball Win District Championships

Congratulations to the Ida Girls Basketball team for beating Airport Friday night for the district championship!   The ladies will face Flat Rock on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Livonia Ladywood.    Good luck!
