Meeting Minutes

 

     Members present:

      Doug Lovell, Tom Dykstra, Tammy Sargent, Jeni Proudfoot and Chris Horney

1.     Reviewed and approved the October 23, 2012 meeting minutes.

2.     Heard a brief Rachel's Challenge update.

3.     Reviewed and discussed at length current disciplinary data. Agreed that the data presented could serve as baseline data for measuring future efforts.

4.     Discussed bullying issues/trends in grades7-12 and the need for a focused effort.

5.     Determined the following action should be taken before the next meeting.

a.     Post current meeting minutes on the Ida PTA Facebook page.

b.     Post bully reporting information on the Ida PTA Facebook page. Bully reports may be made to:

·  Tom Dykstra at dykstra@idaschools.org

·  Doug Lovell at lovell@idaschools.org

·  Or anonymously at http://bullying.idaschools.org/bullymailer.aspx

c.     Tom Dykstra will solicit ideas for anti-bullying themes for future efforts. Suggested ideas include:

·  conflict resolution

·  self-esteem development

·  reducing school violence

·  safe schools efforts

·  individuals are encouraged to send ideas to dykstra@idaschools.org

d.     Develop a framework for poster contests at the elementary, middle school and high school.

e.     Investigate possible training for students and staff for next school year.

f.      Investigate donations to be used for positive behavior support efforts.

g.     Publicize and invite community members, parents and others to our next meeting on April 16, 2013 at 6 PM in the High School Media Center.

h.     Publicize minutes on the district web and blog site.

6.     Held general roundtable discussion

7.      Determined the next meeting will be on April 16, 2013 at 6 PM in the High School Media Center.

RE:      High School Board Report

 

1.      On January 15, a meeting was held with two members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department to discuss collaborative efforts to improve school safety. Sgt. Bryan Angerer and Deputy Jeff Kemp offered planning assistance and other resources available through the Monroe County Sheriff Department.

 

2.      A high school building staff committee met on January 16 and February 6 to discuss building safety and emergency planning issues. The committee reviewed and revised administrative recommendations.

 

3.      High school exams were given on January 16 through 18. Report cards were mailed on or before January 25. The second semester started on January 22.

 

4.      Professional development will be held on February 18.  The itinerary includes the following:

Students in Mr. Bolster's woodshop work on their projects. The projects include everything from ducks to tables to ferris wheels. Yes, I wrote ferris wheels. Two creative students designed and built a working ferris wheel. The picture above is blurry because the students are spinning!

Board of Education

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

February 4, 2013 

Congratulations Pam Johnson, Assistant, on your retirement. On behalf of the entire Board of Education I wish you happiness, relaxation and good health throughout your retirement years. 

The Board of Education approved a resolution to authorize a ballot proposition for the renewal of Ida’s 18 mill operating millage on non-homestead property. The renewal is necessary for Ida to receive the full per pupil foundation allowance from the State of Michigan. The renewal will not increase taxes and it does not apply to homeowners. 

The Board also ratified the Tentative Agreement with the Teacher’s Union. The “Main Points” of the agreement were highlighted in a PowerPoint presentation by Mr. Carsten. Mr. Mathis, President, thanked the teacher’s for their hard work and dedication to Ida Public Schools’ while also highlighting the dedication of the teacher’s bargaining representatives. 

The Board embarked upon an in-depth conversation regarding our Technology Department. They decided to post a position for a Senior Technology Technician for a salary between $50,000 - $70,000 depending upon education and experience of the candidate.  Therefore, the plan will be to staff the department with two full-time employees:  an assistant Technology Technician and a senior Technology Technician which is consistent with past practice. 

The following administrator’s individual contracts of employment were extended for one-year:  Ed Wylie, Shelley Schlump, Tom Dykstra, Rick Samulak, Bert Wagner, Tim Leonard and Doug Lovell. 

Dan Stotz, President of the Athletic Boosters, informed the Board of Education that the Track Committee will be mailing a letter home to all homeowners in the Ida School District in order to solicit funds for the track. He also indicated that they are working on a letter that will be used to solicit corporate donations as well.  

The Board of Education’s sub-committee on School Safety met on February 4 and discussed the following items:  charge of the committee, studied past practice regarding safety, examined past work in Ida, looked at our current safety plans, and examined some of the recommendations from the community meeting as well as the building meetings. The sub-committee will be convening with a group of community volunteers on March 7, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

6th grade Band students warm up prior to their Tuesday evening performance.  Students played solos, duets, and ensembles before a packed audience of parents and family in the Middle School Cafeteria.

Science lab would like to thank the PTA for so many new books. Mrs. Teague’s 3rd graders are enjoying their first look at the books. They love them! Every week Kindergarten is hearing a new story. The new books are a great supplement to the Science curriculum. Thank you PTA for all you do!
